Sound Activities are enjoyable and stimulating books providing a fun way to give essential revision work on phonics. The books feature phonic based exercises providing activities which correspond to the word families in Spelling Made Easy.

A useful and stimulating resource for Independent Word Work in Literacy Hour, whilst providing essential revision work on phonics for pupils in need of extra support. The books include:

MISSING WORDS:

This activity is a cloze procedure designed to encourage and reinforce:

  • reading and comprehension skills, in particular inference
  • use of words in context
  • the provision of answers in a random order at the bottom of the sheet enables the less confident child to be more successful

    CROSSWORDS:

    This activity is designed to encourage and reinforce:

  • spatial awareness and organisation
  • reading and comprehension skills
  • logical thinking - the numbers of squares indicate how many letters are required. Similarly, answers are provided in a random order at the bottom of the sheet

    LINEAR WORDSEARCH:

    This activity is presented in a linear format in order to encourage and reinforce:

  • sound and whole word recognition
  • left to right tracking skills
  • skimming and scanning skills
  • hand to eye co-ordination
  • It is suggested that once the word has been located within the line of letters it is underlined, then the look-cover-write-check strategy is employed by writing the word at the side on the line provided
     
    Introductory Level followed by Levels 1 & 2

    Levels 1 and 2 contain exercises on the sequencing of phrases of sentences. This comprises of jumbled sentences that need to be arranged into a sensible order. This exercise is designed to encourage and reinforce:

  • logical sequencing skills
  • understanding of sentence structure and correct grammar
  • use of capital letters and full stops
  • hand to eye co-ordination
  • copying and handwriting skills. It is suggested that after the sentences have been written out correctly, words from the particular word family are underlined

    Sound Activities Extention Exercises
     

    This is a collection of extension exercises aimed at pupils aged 10 years and above. It has been written to develop and encourage reinforcement of phonic skills, while at the same time encouraging the use of reference books such as the dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia and the atlas.

    The worksheets offer a useful resource for independent word level work, required in the National Literacy Strategy, providing consolidation of spelling patterns, rules and strategies, phonic investigation and practice.

    Each activity presents a different, challenging and enjoyable way of reinforcing spellings and word usage, helping the pupil to become more confident with sounds and how they link into word families.

    A mixed bag of stimulating exercises is included along with enjoyable wordsearches and crossword puzzles.
