Double Club English

Double Club English is a brand new football-based literacy programme, aimed at reluctant readers (particularly boys). The series is based on the teaching principles used in the award-winning Double Club education programme created by Arsenal Football Club.

The Pupil Books tell the story of Shelby Town FC - delivering 'soap opera' style story lines through a rich range of text types and genres. Each book provides 30 structured units, with the story being featured on the left hand page and follow up spelling, grammar, punctuation and comprehension questions on the right.

The stories are illustrated with graphic novel style image to support the text and engage less able readers. The Team Talk section features Speaking and Listening activities which are linked to the story and to real life football situations.

  2. Use the Team Talk section to discuss the text.
  3. Use the Skills Practice sections to practice the focus literacy skills of the unit,
  4. Use the Game On section to review comprehension of the text as a whole
  5. Use the Post Match photocopymaster (in the accompanying Teacher's Book) to apply the skills taught in a writing context.
