A complete guided reading programme for the primary years which will develop reading and writing skills over a wide range of genre through books that children find fun.

Decodable Books - Synthetic & Analytical Phonics Support

3 levels of books giving pupils an opportunity to practice new phonetic elements. Each level also includes a careful review of previously seen phonetic elements thereby practicing decoding skills and recognising high-frequency words.

Supports the Rose Report recommendations for phonics.

  • Books are designed to be used in sequential manner.
  • Careful control of vocabulary in these books ensures that children receive maximum exposure to words they can decode or read by sight.
  • Vocabulary in the books is cumulative.
  • The inside back cover of each book lists the new vocabulary, new phonetic elements, and new high frequency words introduced in the text. Books work best if teachers use this information to teach these elements first.
  • A chart is available to see the progression of all 96 books.
    These books are intended to be part of a collection of titles making up a balanced programme as per the Rose Report.

Level A
Introduces all initial consonants and vowel phonemes a, e, i, o u also introduces 31 of the first 100 high frequency words. The level ends with an assessment book so progress can be measured.

Level B
Consolidates what was learnt in level A and introduces further phoneme sounds, and a further 38 high frequency words. This level also ends with an assessment book.

Level C
Reviews what has been taught in levels A & B building the pupils’ vocabulary and includes the introduction of the final consonant and vowel phonemes to complete the programme.

Core Books KS1
100 titles

Book Banded from Pink to Purple, these core readers are fun and engaging and covers a variety of styles and genres. The books are very finely graded, enabling pupils to build key skills that are vital when developing reading.

  • 20 finely graded steps take starter readers to working within Level 2B.
  • Each step has 5 books including an anthology which introduces the level.
  • Followed by 3 further books which have a variety of Genre inc. plays, recounts etc.
  • Each level has a Benchmark book which has 3 various assessments:
    - A reading record for miscue analysis.
    - A general assessment to assess reading progress.
    - And a writing assessment exercise.
  • Teachers Notes which are easy to manage include:
  • An overview of each level, showing what came before and is coming next.
  • Guided reading notes for each piece of text.
  • Highlighted on-going assessment in orange boxes.

Core Books KS2
48 titles

Complete novels covering Book Bands Lime to Magenta with extra activities for enhancing comprehension, writing, analytical and investigative skills, taught through books which cover a range of genre and are exciting to read.

  • A variety of Genre to teach higher order reading skills from reading age 8 – 12.
  • Each book is supported by a teacher’s book called ’Questioning the Text‘ which includes:
    - A before you read section.
    - While you read section which highlighting vocabulary to watch out for.
    - And comprehension questions to assess the pupils understanding of the text including inferential questions.
  • Many titles also have a support book called ‘The Writers Craft’. This takes extracts from the books and enables pupils to develop their writing skills through a variety of activities (fully photocopiable) including:
    - Shared writing opportunities.
    - Proof reading.
    - Editing.
    - Share ideas and justifications.
    - Examine author’s style and attempt to write the next section of the text.

Extension Books KS1

Great extension readers that are book banded from Pink to Magenta and fit neatly alongside the core reading books. These books enable pupils to reinforce skills they learn using the core readers.

The number of titles means that pupils who need extra practice need not be rushed on as all the books in a level have been completed.

 

 

This is a resource which encourages children to tell stories as well as to listen and read stories, thus helping to develop oral language skills. These extension readers also double up as wonderful take home resources.

  • Starter readers through to working towards Level 5C
  • A variety of genre and authors and illustrators give a breadth to this programme that ensures that all pupils can make progress.

 

Each book has teacher support which include for the first 10 levels:

  • Details on the content of the book, high frequency words, etc.
  • Guided reading notes.
  • Follow up activities; for whole class used on whiteboard or printed for small groups.
  • Hands-on activities for many titles .
  • Future sessions work.
  • Ongoing Observations.
  • Some titles have oral reading records to check if pupils are ready to go back to core readers.

 

Each book in the top 4 levels has teachers support which include:

  • A synopsis of the story.
  • Learning outcomes.
  • Guided Reading Notes.
  • A follow-up activity.
