Each book has a teacher's introduction and a wipe clean plastic sheet for the exercises. There are seven Big Books available each covering one set of the Jolly Phonics letter sounds.

Jolly Grammar

Jolly Grammar is the next stage after Jolly Phonics. By teaching the key rules, it helps children express themselves better, bring variety to their writing and improve their spelling in a structured way. Jolly Grammar uses colours (the same used by Montessori Schools) to help children identify parts of speech in sentences, for example verbs are red and nouns are black.

Grammar Handbook

A comprehensive teaching programme for the year after Jolly Phonics.
The Grammar Handbook 1 covers grammar, spelling and punctuation, with a programme of two days per week over the year.

Designed to improve children's writing and spelling, it has a similar format to The Phonics Handbook, including various 'actions' and indeed revisits some of Jolly Phonics.

The children on the front cover of the book are doing the 'action' for the past tense.

Book 2 also available.

Jolly Grammar Big Book

An ideal accompaniment to The Grammar Handbook 1, this big book allows the teacher to introduce the rudiments of grammar to the whole class. The book is accompanied by a wipe-clean plastic sheet for the activities and handwriting practice.
There is a comprehensive introduction explaining how to use the big book and relating it to the handbook.
The following topics are covered:

  • the alphabet
  • proper nouns
  • common nouns
  • short vowel sounds
  • plurals
  • pronouns

Jolly Dictionary

Teaching children how to use a dictionary will improve reading and writing, and help them become independent learners. The Jolly Dictionary complements the Jolly Grammar books and is designed to teach children how to look up and understand words they don’t know.

Over 6,000 age-appropriate words are included. The words used in the definitions have been carefully selected so that children find them easy to read and understand. In addition, the Jolly Dictionary is beautifully illustrated throughout, often using the Jolly Phonics characters to help clarify examples.
