Wellington Square

Reading Age <6 to 8.5+

Wellington Square is designed to meet the needs of children aged 7-13+ who are having difficulty in learning to read. It provides straightforward progression through all 5 levels of the scheme, from wordless picture books to storybooks with full-text. Wellington Square widens your pupils' reading experience through imaginative and stimulating support material

 

 

Aimed at 7-11 year olds , the scheme can also be used for older children with moderate or even severe reading disabilities.

 


With over 10,000 schools in the UK choosing Wellington Square for their struggling readers, this scheme offers the broadest range of resources with a high interest level and low reading age.
There are 30 books in Set A and Set B, 6 at each level telling the adventures of Rocky and friends.

Storybooks

  • Wellington square storbooks are available as mixed sets containing six titles for each level, they introduce and develop the characters in the square
  • Set A is designed to be read in order, as the vocabulary and structures used are introduced and progressed in a controlled way. Set B readers can be read in any order and provide extention and further practice material.
  • Stories contain characters and situations that pupils can relate to, motivating them to read on
  • Raise PSHE discussion topics such as bullying and fear.
  • Full Colour and attractively illustrated to hold readers' attention.
  • Provide a variety of reading materials for your pupils to enjoy

 

 

Reinforcement Readers

  • Consisting of 20 reading books, with four at each level, the reinforcement readers extend teh scheme across the levels and provide your pupils with further practice and consolidation before they move on.

  • Exciting, modern and often humourous stories it motivate your lower ability pupils

Non-Fiction

  • All the non fiction books cover familar themes and characters or are set in the square, making topics accessible and motivating for your pupils
  • Covers key non-fiction genres: recount, report, explanation, persuasion, instruction and discussion.
  • Each non-fiction book is linked to a set A storybook and helps readers learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

Teachers Resource Packs

The wellington square teachers resource pack provides all the resources needed to ensure that opportunities to support and extend word, sentence and Text level work are maximised at every level. Each pack Contains:

  • Non-text-specific games and activities
  • General copymasters, phonic worksheets and information worksheets.
  • Storytexts and copymasters for each of the set A, Set B and reinforcement readers
  • Notes to support the Story Tapes, Character Cards, Activity Books and Games Pack

Think About It offers an exciting fresh new look combined with the Wellington Square tried-and-tested combination of familiar characters and settings with irresistible plots - guaranteeing a resource that will engage even the most reluctant readers. To help promote thinking skills the stories are based around thought provoking Citizenship themes.
There are two fiction and two non fiction books at each level.

Activity Books

The Activity Books contain words, sentence and text level activities from the National Literacy Strategy, aligned to the Set A readers. The books also contain stickers which are ideal for skills development. There is one Activity Book for each level of Wellington Square.
